Now, health officials are following up with people who have been in contact with the patients to determine their immunization status, and if necessary, offer the post-exposure protection.

This is the only confirmed measles case in Interior Health at this time.

Clinics in the central-eastern region ran out of vaccines after the outbreak started in late February, with an additional 18,000 MMR vaccines expected to be brought in by Wednesday.

Anyone who is concerned about exposure to measles should watch for symptoms of measles.

Measles cases are rising globally, including in wealthy nations such as the United States and Germany, where some parents shun the vaccines mostly for philosophical or religious reasons, or concerns - debunked by medical science - that the vaccines against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) could cause autism.

Australian health authorities issued a measles alert last week after an Australian traveler contracted the highly contagious disease while holidaying in Vietnam and brought it back to Darwin in the Northern Territory.

The rash begins on the face as flat, red spots and spreads down the neck and trunk to the rest of the body.

Measles spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. People are considered immune if they have received two doses of the MMR vaccine, have had a measles illness previously, or were born before 1969.

"All of these cases followed a measles case imported from overseas". The other case was an adult who had a "common exposure" to the student. According to the Center for Disease Control, children are recommended to get two doses of the vaccine at 12 through 15 months and the second dose at four through six years of age.
