Sen. Feinstein Debates Kids Demanding Green New Deal

The children wrote a letter to Feinstein on a poster board decorated with hard-drawn animals and flowers, asking that she support the Green New Deal. It's not just a cute stunt, in many cases, these kiddos are getting serious results.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) ripped into critics of her radical Green New Deal proposal in an interview Friday, declaring "I'm the boss" since she was at least trying to solve a problem.

In an interview with Reshma Saujani of "Girls Who Code", Ocasio-Cortez spoke of the doubters she had when she took on Rep. Joe Crowley (D., N.Y.) in her stunning Democratic primary upset past year and how she dismisses skeptics now.

ACTIVIST: I hear what you're saying, but we're the people who voted you.

Judging by the video, Feinstein appeared prepared to negotiate at first. "I know what I'm doing", Feinstein says. While many Democrats applauded this seemingly selfless decision, the Fox News crew suggested she "redistribute" some of her own $174,000 salary to her office staffers instead of moving money down from her higher-level staffers.

"Some scientists have said that we have 12 years to turn this around", one girl said. "Well, it's not going to get turned around in 10 years", Feinstein responded, which is the political equivalent of telling a kid that the tooth fairy doesn't exist. I was elected by nearly a million vote plurality. You come in here and you say it has to be my way or the highway.

But when others started to circulate a video with the meeting in its entirety, many believed it showed a different scenario - a veteran lawmaker patiently explaining the way that politics work to a group of kids accosting her. Feinstein's argument, which the kids seemed unwilling to accept, was that supporting legislation that has no bipartisan support is counterproductive. "And I know what I'm doing", she tells the group.

Feinstein told the students she is opposed to the Green New Deal for several reasons, including "we can't pay for it" and she doesn't agree with what it says. "Because no one else has even tried".

Feinstein, in a statement to USA TODAY, did not apologize but said she wanted the children who visited her office to know they were heard and called the debate "spirited".

"I didn't expect anything to go viral, but now that it has I think we should just keep advocating to get the Green New Deal", Jasia said. "Maybe people should listen a little bit". "But we're the people who voted you, you're supposed to listen to us".

True, the children visiting her office likely did not vote for her - but as another child points out, the steps taken or not taken to improve climate change will affect their generation in the near future. "I have been and remain committed to doing everything I can to enact real, meaningful climate change legislation", Feinstein wrote.

On Friday, the Sunrise Movement posted a video of Sen.

Employees at a nearby grocery store and pizzaria told the newspaper that they had never heard of the now-famous congresswoman patronizing the businesses - though a server at a nearby taqueria had spotted Ocasio-Cortez once, when she came in for the goal of being filmed by a news crew.
