Juventus midfielder Sami Khedira did not travel with his side to their Champions League last-16 first leg at Atletico Madrid because medical tests revealed he had an irregular heartbeat, the Serie A leaders said on Tuesday.

The upshot of the night's result is that Juve face a very tough ask to reach the Champions League quarter finals after defeat in Madrid.

FC Barcelona captain Lionel Messi has been lauded as "the only genius in world football" by a former Real Madrid manager when quizzed about his rivalry with Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

There were no goals in the first half at the Wanda Metropolitano.

However it was the hosts that got the last laugh with Jose Gimenez and Diego Godin both scoring to give the Spanish side a 2-0 lead, after VAR controversially ruled out a goal for Alvaro Morata.

And Ronaldo reiterated that figure when he breezed through the post-match mixed zone after the match.

The Germany worldwide was left behind as his team traveled to Spain ahead of their round of 16 Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid.

Of course five is also the amount of times that he's won the Ballon d'Or but having twice beaten Atleti in finals for Real there's no doubt he was referencing the Champions League wins.

"We will try to grow and improve, but this is our style, or form and our way".

The Argentinian forward said: "I have learnt a great deal form him, particularly in terms of the way we work, how to be a model professional and being fully focused during training so that you know what to expect during games".
