Bernie Sanders’ second run is a tougher race

Bernie Sanders has raised almost $6 million since launching his 2020 bid for the White House - a day ago.

Trump's backhanded tweet about Sanders, who unsuccessfully faced off against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the Democratic Party's nomination in 2016, didn't sit well with the Vermont senator. The California Democrat had been the biggest first-day fundraiser in the race so far.

Sanders' campaign raised $1 million in 3 1/2 hours on Tuesday morning, according to a person familiar with the campaign, who wasn't authorized to publicly disclose the early numbers and spoke on condition of anonymity. His campaign helped lay the groundwork for the leftward lurch that has dominated Democratic politics in the era of President Donald Trump. Jim Braude was joined by Jesse Mermell, former communications director for Governor Deval Patrick; and Andrea Burns - a former Sanders delegate who is now active with the Our Revolution movement that spawned from his candidacy.

Sanders' identification as a democratic socialist in 2016-when he was credited for bold proposals on healthcare, education, and economic, environmental and social challenges-became a defining aspect of his career.

"If each of those candidates earnestly enter the money race, I think it would nearly be impossible not to be the most expensive primary race in history - especially with candidates like Sanders raising $6 million in a day", said Sarah Bryner, research director at OpenSecrets.org, which tracks money in politics. Lee said. "Shirley set us on a path toward progress, and now Kamala Harris is carrying that legacy".

The question hanging over Sanders now is whether his moment has passed.

Like Ocasio-Cortez, who in turn picked on some of the themes Sanders first identified during 2016 campaign, the Vermont Senator cited health care, student debt, climate change, income inequality, gun violence and "demonization" of undocumented immigrants among issues that have persuaded him into seeking for a second time the Democratic nomination.

Ms. Warren is making her refusal to take money from PACs and federal lobbyists a central part of her fundraising pitch, insisting she will not be beholden to special interest groups.

As the 2020 race gears up, Trump has continued to refer to Senator Elizabeth Warren as "Pocahontas", a reference to a controversy over her claims of Native American heritage. Four years on, Sanders is clearly not the only progressive in town.

"Crazy Bernie has just entered the race".

Sanders faces some other difficulties, as well.

"It's a sign of Sanders' success that he now has so many imitators", Dante Scala, a political science professor at the University of New Hampshire, told AFP. At the time, Sanders said his populist platform would endure.

Some 2.5 million Americans gave to him in the last presidential cycle.
