Jody Wilson-Raybould resigns from Trudeau's cabinet

The firm is facing fraud and corruption charges related to contracts in Libya.

The political scandal erupted after The Globe and Mail released an incriminating report that suggested that members from the PMO tried to pressure former Attorney General and Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould into interfering in a criminal prosecution against the Montreal construction and engineering giant. "She confirmed for me a conversation we had this Fall where i told her directly that any decisions on matters regarding public prosecutions were here own", said Justin Trudeau.

It's highly likely that the issue was discussed by the prime minister and senior cabinet members, but that's not unusual given the possible ramifications if SNC-Lavalin has the book thrown at it for influence peddling and bribery on foreign soil.

Trudeau denies the allegations but Dion has decided they're worth investigating.

Ms Wilson-Raybould has refused to comment on the story, citing solicitor-client privilege. On Sunday, Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer wrote to Trudeau to demand that he waive that privilege and allow Wilson-Raybould to speak openly.

This renewed calls for the House of Commons Justice Committee to conduct a study on the matter. He also said at that time that he still had "full confidence" in Wilson-Raybould.

On Monday, Canada's independent Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner confirmed he has launched an examination following a request from two opposition New Democrat MPs.

"Justin Trudeau promised Canadians he would change the way politics worked in Ottawa, but instead his Liberal government continues to prioritize helping insiders and the rich get ahead".

In recent days, Liberal operatives have attempted to smear Wilson-Raybould's performance even though she was widely seen as a credible and competent Minister throughout her tenure.

Trudeau moved Wilson-Raybould to the veterans affairs portfolio in January. The attorney general must consent to the negotiation of the agreement.
