'Mechanical issue' diverts flight bringing DeSantis to South Florida

"He failed in his duties to keep our families and children safe during the devastating shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14,2018", according to a statement by DeSantis. "Pollack said, "[Tony's] a law-and-order-type policeman who wants to do right by the community and keep the community safe".

"Gregory Tony will be a champion for Broward County who will work tirelessly to safeguard our schools and our streets while ensuring accountability within the Sheriff's office", DeSantis said in a statement.

They said the policy as written provided deputy's discretion on whether to confront the shooter. He is the county's first black sheriff, and he was reportedly recommended by the father of a Parkland victim.

DeSantis then referred to the part of the executive order that establishes a resiliency office to address climate impacts.

Tony, 40, has served five years on the SWAT team.

DeSantis will share the news Friday afternoon, sources told the Sun Sentinel.

"The Members of the House of Representatives are thankful that the Governor's plane landed safely after reporting mechanical difficulties", Oliva, a Miami Lakes Republican, said in a statement. If Israel challenges the suspension, the state Senate would hold a trial and could either fire or reinstate him. "I served the county honorably", he said.

Speaking at a press conference Friday, Israel called the suspension "unjustified" and vowed to fight it in court and before the Florida Senate.

While with the department Tony started Blue Spear Solutions, a company focused on active shooter training and response, including efforts to train civilians on "Stop the Bleed" techniques.

According to Florida statute, the governor has the power to suspend the sheriff for actions such as "misfeasance" and "neglect of duty" and may fill the office by appointment for the period of suspension.

Last April, DeSantis said he would have suspended Israel if he were governor.

"The neglect of duty and incompetence that was connected to the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School has been well documented, and I have no interest in dancing on Scott Israel's political grave", DeSantis said. "This was about politics, not about Parkland".

In an interview before DeSantis's decision, Israel's lawyer Stuart Kaplan said the sheriff plans to "respect the process" and may contest it.

"Once again, I want to extend my deepest sympathies, my heartfelt sympathies to the families who lost loved ones on that terrible day in Parkland", he said. Even before a state fact-finding commission empaneled to review the tragedy released its findings, DeSantis was criticizing Israel on the campaign trail.

"I'm proud to say that despite a tragedy, 17 lives were not lost for nothing", said Bell.

"For now, it's on to court", he said.

Parents also bashed Israel for saying during a nationally broadcast interview he had provided "amazing leadership" in the shooting's aftermath.
