The Timberwolves fired Tom Thibodeau on Sunday and named Saunders the interim head coach.
"I'm excited to see what he'll do, because he's a very enthusiastic coach and he's a very good communicator", said general manager Scott Layden, who was hired by Thibodeau, also the president of basketball operations, and faces an uncertain future with the club.
"We would like to thank Tom for his efforts and wish him all the best", Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor said in a statement. "These decisions are never easy to make, but we felt necessary to move our organization forward". Monty Williams and Chauncey Billups have also been reportedly discussed. "I think (Saunders) is going to be great". I think he's going to do a great job, especially because you can talk to him.
"We still have hopes to get into the playoffs and I think with half the season left, let's see if this change will make a difference". "It's just not", Rose said. Taylor has made clear that he expects results this season, but I thought Thibs would get the entire year to show them. "We just lost against a bunch of teams that we're a better team".More news: Princess Charlotte will love Kate Middleton's next special engagement

ESPN later reported the firing of Thibodeau as well as interest in former member of the Wolves Fred Hoiberg for the opening. Hoiberg was sacked by Chicago in early December.
After a strenuous offseason and hard start to the regular season, the Minnesota Timberwolves have relived Tom Thibodeau of his coaching duties after three seasons. It's already been a whirlwind of a season thanks to Sunday's firing of Thibodeau and the Jimmy Butler trade on November 12. Thibodeau and Minnesota's front office eventually sent him to the 76ers in mid-November in exchange for a package centered around Robert Covington and Dario Saric.
The Timberwolves will play their first game without Thibodeau tonight at 8 P.M. EST against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
