U.S. News & World Report rolled out its list of the best diets of 2019, and the Mediterranean diet took the top spot. Research also links the Mediterranean Diet to longer lifespans. It consists of plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy fats like those found in olive oil and fatty fish like salmon and sardines, and nuts and seeds.

It's based on lifestyles from countries along the mediterranean sea.

To determine the best diets, a panel of nutritionists and specialists in diabetes, heart health, and weight loss reviewed 41 diets, including the increasingly popular ketogenic, or keto, diet, Weight Watchers, and Atkins.

Last year, the best overall diet came out to a tie between the Mediterranean diet and the DASH diet, a government-backed diet that stands for dietary approaches to stop hypertension.

"The top diets promote eating the foods that we've been told to eat, like whole grains, fruits and veggies, and going easy on sugar and saturated fat", she added. In fact, the diet is safe for most people, including children and older people.

And no, unfortunately, there is still no magic fix for losing weight, but there are certain diets that have been shown to be more successful.

The flexitarian diet encourages people to try alternative meat options, like tofu, but leaves room for flexibility if you can't quite fully give up meat.

The report also listed diets that are best for fast weight loss.

The plan focuses on fruit, vegetables, whole grain, lean protein and low-fat dairy and eliminates foods high in fat and sugar-sweetened drinks and candies, according to U.S. News and World Report. It assigns points aiming for nutritious foods with fewer calories.
