Fortnite Maker Epic Games Made $3 Billion Profit in 2018

The success of "Fortnite" saw privately held Epic amass a $15 billion valuation in September.

Epic did not respond to a request for comment. Little boys and girls around the world with new video game systems sat in shock and awe as they tried to get into a match of the battle royale game.

According to TechCrunch, Epic missed out on the lucrative Chinese market. However, the investment cards haven't always been stacked in Epic's favor. They sensed a change in the way games were headed based on diminishing returns and growing budgets for console games, the increase of "live" games like League of Legends and the emerging role of smartphones. The main difference between the Epic store is that it gives developers 88 percent of their income, unlike that Valve - the company behind Steam - which takes a 30 percent. That's a strategy Sweeney called "Epic 4.0". It's not that Epic Games is stranger to popularity as it has had titles in the past which have done quite well. One of the key is that Fortnite is available on nearly every platform possible.

As a private company, Epic keeps its financials closely guarded. Because it's in 2018 that a game has really catapulted a company into the billion dollar profit club.

During the summer, analysts predicted that Fortnite would raise $2 billion in 2018, but now it is clear that those estimates were too conservative.

According to a November study from app data firm Sensor Tower, iPhone users alone were spending $1.23 million every day on purchases in the "Fortnite" universe - almost $40 million a month. Also, as Fortnite is a cross-platform game, it's challenging to aggregate all the revenues for statistical purposes.

If you haven't played Super Meat Boy, it's a hardcore, fast-paced platformer that has you play as the titular Meat Boy, who is trying to save his girlfriend Bandage Girl from the clutches of the evil Dr. Fetus. The extent of that financial success is hard to calculate, however.

The figure is on its own very impressive but what's more interesting is that Fortnite is a free to play game. The latest, Season 7, dropped early this month with a range of tweaks for the Christmas period.

They have added new game modes in Fortnite and their Unreal engine is already popular among developers.
