Most health insurances are accepted, and a limited number of flu vaccine is available for those without health insurance. Despite the abundance of research conducted on the value and effects of vaccines, public health discourse is still laden with criticisms from anti-vaccination groups, especially within legal frameworks that propose mandating vaccines like the flu shot. And there's other people in our state and communities who have elderly grandparents or parents, or even young children.

Of course, the flu shot isn't ideal - the CDC says its effectiveness varies, generally reducing your risk by 40 to 60 percent.

In 2008, New Jersey's Public Health Council issued a compulsory flu vaccination for all children before entering preschools and daycare centers.

When considering seeing a doctor about flu symptoms, Borgen also said it can be beneficial to call ahead of time. Health officials recommend that people be vaccinated by the end of October.

Influenza awareness Week on December 2-8 educates military personnel about the potential impacts of influenza, or the flu, on the Department of Defense (DoD) mission and our Force Health Protection Readiness. "The absolute best way to protect yourself and others from the flu is to get vaccinated". Early signs are that this coming year might be dominated by the H1N1 strain, for which the flu vaccine tends to have higher effectiveness rates. At a time of widespread fear and grief, few options existed for treatment or prevention of the flu.

"We will likely see more flu cases as the season continues", said Dr. Larry Madoff, who directs the department's division of epidemiology and immunization.

Area Democrats 60 and older have gotten a flu shot at 63 percent, compared with 70 percent of New Jersey area Republicans. If, however, you have symptoms of flu and are in a high risk group, are very sick or anxious about your illness, contact your health care provider.

This means, people often benefit from receiving the right information, at the right time, from a healthcare provider they trust.

Now, with a new flu season upon us, we have a chance to honor the memories of these and so many others by reducing the toll that flu takes on our nation. They have a wealth of resources for nurses and patients on their website.
