Derek Fisher Named Head Coach Of Los Angeles Sparks

The Los Angeles Sparks have named five-time National Basketball Association champion and former New York Knicks boss Derek Fisher as their new head coach.

Fisher had no previous head-coaching experience before then-team president Phil Jackson hired him on to rectify the struggling NY franchise.

OFFICIAL: Brian Agler has resigned as Los Angeles Sparks head coach.

UPDATE: The Los Angeles Sparks officially announced the hiring of Fisher as head coach on Wednesday.

Fisher played in the National Basketball Association for 18 seasons and helped the Los Angeles Lakers win five titles.

Two years ago, Agler guided the team to the WNBA Championship in 2016. "There is no finer organization in the WNBA and I can't wait to work with our ownership group, front office, talented players and staff to cement a culture of sustained excellence, which is what LA basketball fans demand - and deserve".

Fisher will inherit a team that includes two-time WNBA MVP Candace Parker. The Knicks were 17-65 in his first season, the worst record in franchise history. "Derek is a champion and proven leader on and off the court".

But that was back in 2016, and it's been almost three years since Fisher has gotten the chance to coach.

Fisher served as head coach of the Knicks from 2014 to 2016, during which he went 40-96 before being fired in the middle of the 2015-16 season.
