Do Not Eat Any Romaine Lettuce — CDC Warning


- Atlanta's Center for Disease Control and Prevention has sent out a warning about consuming romaine lettuce before the Thanksgiving holiday.

This time, 32 people in 11 states have been struck down by lettuce-linked E. coli - 13 of whom are receiving hospital treatment. No deaths have been reported, according to the CDC.

The most recent illness onset in the USA among these cases was October 31, 2018. This outbreak is not related to a multistate outbreak linked to romaine lettuce this summer.

Health Canada is advising consumers in Ontario and Quebec to avoid eating romaine lettuce and salad mixes containing romaine lettuce until more is known about the outbreak and the cause of contamination.

If you think you've gotten ill from eating lettuce, please talk to your doctor as soon as possible.

The CDC also notes that "people usually get sick from Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) 2-8 days (average of 3-4 days) after swallowing the germ".

Restaurants and retailers should not serve or sell any romaine lettuce, including salads and salad mixes containing romaine. Their investigation is ongoing, and they will provide more information when it becomes available. Those who have any type of romaine lettuce in the fridge - including whole heads, romaine hearts, boxes of romaine or salad mixes with romaine - are asked to throw it away, even if some of it was eaten without leading to illness.

The specific strain detected in the current outbreak is related to a strain that infected people in 2017 in the USA and Canada, the CDC said. Follow these five steps to clean your refrigerator.
