House Republicans elect McCarthy as leader with eye to 2020

McCarthy finally wins the top House GOP position, though it came without the Speaker's gavel.

Next in line for the GOP leadership hierarchy in the new Congress is Rep. Steve Scalise, the current No. 3 House Republican, who successfully vied for the position of minority whip in the new Congress. Scalise, as majority whip, gained a higher national profile after he was injured past year in a shooting during a Republican congressional baseball practice.

Democratic gains in governor's races this year might have been the party's biggest victory.

"When I see women, and women and men of color being elected to Congress, I feel a sense of pride in America".

Jordan is a leader of the far-right House Freedom Caucus.

The Democrats seeking to stop Pelosi's rise claim they have the votes to block her. Rep. Kurt Schrader of OR has said Pelosi "doesn't have the votes" to become speaker again, in part because of the newly elected members who have promised to oppose her. Or Ilhan Omar, of Minnesota's 5th congressional district, who is the first Somali-American elected to the U.S. Congress.

At a news conference Wednesday, McCarthy vowed to help the GOP win back the majority in the House and said Republicans will oppose Democrats if they target President Donald Trump. Joni Ernst was elected vice chair of the Senate Republican Conference.

Cornyn added: "I think we ought to try to be a little bit more pragmatic about how much money can reasonably be spent to do what the president wants to do within the time period the appropriation is created to cover".

"He's been at the forefront of the fight throughout these last two years, when quite honestly, the rest of the folks around this place weren't interested", Rep. Scott Perry, R-PA, a Jordan ally, told ABC News.

While the faces of Democratic Senate leadership remained largely the same, Republicans saw a shake-up due to term limits and retirements.

Although California's 45th is an affluent district, the tax law's near-elimination of the state and local tax, or SALT, deduction made it a net tax hike for numerous district's upper-middle-class residents.

In the House, a group of Democratic lawmakers are determined to ensure Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi doesn't become Speaker in January.

Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas said Republicans exceeded expectations by limiting their losses.

History teacher Francine Werner '68 said that while many believe that the Democrats can only focus on one issue or the other, she feels they can successfully manage to address several.

Many Republicans side with Jordan's theory, which is that Republicans, despite a GOP monopoly on power in Washington, lost because they didn't "do what we said" - including delivering Trump's priority to build the border wall with Mexico.

But Rep. Gary J. Palmer of Alabama, who was elected chairman of the Republican Policy Committee, said Republicans will serve in their role as the opposition. "I think he will [be the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee] one day".

"If their agenda is simply investigations and impeachment. we'll be there to defend the American public", he said. "I think you have to advance ideas that are better than theirs, and some of the ideas I've heard out of them, that is a low bar".

Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana won a unanimous vote to become whip, the same position he held as the majority party.
