Benjamin Mendy hit by new injury setback and withdraws from France fixtures

France will be without Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, Alexandre Lacazette and Benjamin Mendy for their Nations League clash against the Netherlands.

Didier Deschamps, the national coach, has chose to convene Moussa Sissoko (Tottenham Hotspur) and Alexandre Lacazette (Arsenal FC).

The injury setback will be frustrating for Martial, who had fought his way back into the national squad after scoring six goals in five league appearances for United.

Martial, who won his last cap for France in March, was recalled by Didier Deschamps last week after being left out of the World Cup squad.

"What he is doing in Manchester now is closer to what he is able to do".

'He is still a young player, but one who, I hope, is seeing the importance he has taken in Manchester in recent weeks'.

Deschamps has been happy with Lacazette's return to form though initially favoured Martial - though the Manchester United star was not passed fit by France's doctors upon reporting to Clairefontaine.

City left-back Mendy will miss both fixtures after a scan in the French capital showed an issue with his knee.

The former Monaco forward continued his fine run in front of goal by netting a second-half penalty but Mendy had the last laugh as his City side ran out 3-1 winners at the Etihad.

A draw with the Netherlands can guarantee the world champions a top spot in the group and a chance of contending for the Nations League title next June.
