Apple announces New MacBook Air: smaller bezels, smarter, faster, lighter

The all-new MacBook Air features a Retina display, a first for the series and a feature that's always been anticipated. Mercifully, you'll still be able to find a headphone jack on this laptop as well. To be more specific about the display, it runs at a 2560×1600 resolution, a huge step up from the previously used sub-1080p displays.

Apple's new MacBook Air 2 features a 13.3-inch Retina Display with minimal bezels surrounding the corners.

The new MacBook Air will start at $1199 and it is available for order today.

To log in or make purchases with Apple Pay, you can now use Touch ID to authenticate your identity. The MacBook Air weighs in at 2.75 pounds which about 1.25kg and thanks to the development of technology the computer's footprint has also shrunk by 17% compared to the old MacBook Air.

On top of this Apple has included two Thunderbolt 3-enabled USB-C ports on the left-hand side.

In terms of specifications, the MacBook Air comes with an 8th-generation Intel dual-core i5, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

MacBook Air comes in gold, silver and space grey colour options. It also features 48% more color than the previous generation. The trackpad is now the new Force Touch trackpad that's 20% larger, and offers haptic feedback.

Cook talked about Steve Jobs pulling the MacBook Air out of that envelope years ago, talking about how it changed the industry across the board.

The body of the MacBook Air is all-aluminium, it is 100% recycled.

That Touch ID sensor with T2 security chip, built into the new butterfly mechanism keyboard, seems very well executed, and for such a take-anywhere system, makes flawless sense. Not only is it created to prevent MacBook Air users from getting malware but it also makes it physically impossible for hackers to access your microphone when you're most vulnerable. It has a 13.3-inch display.

What explains the perennial popularity of the MacBook Air? Storage-wise, it supports up to 1.5TB SSD that is 60 percent faster than the predecessor. Well, if you're planning on upgrading your tablet, I've got bad news for you: You'll need to buy a new Apple Pencil. This base configuration starts at $1,199, which makes this model the cheapest, until you start adding more to the configuration.

The MacBook Air was popular because it was one of Apple's most affordable machines: a sub-$1,000 machine, ideal for students, travelers and everyone on lower / middle incomes who couldn't splash out for something more.
