The newspaper claims that Mane picked up the injury during Senegal's African Cup of Nations qualifying victory over Sudan on Saturday - which they won 3-0 - and team doctor Abdourahmane Fedior says the attacker will miss the return fixture today.

Mane's injury as reported in the Mail also comes after Virgil van Dijk was sent home by Holland because of a rib issue the defender hasn't been able to shake off since being substituted at Southampton.

And none of the three have yet been definitively ruled out of the Reds' Premier League trip to Huddersfield Town on Saturday evening.

"He wanted to play against Germany but you have to give the club something back now".

Speaking to the media, Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman explained the full extent of Van Dijk's injury but stressed that the centre-back should be able to play on Saturday.

The Reds trio have all been suffering with injuries, with Van Dijk and Salah picking up issues during worldwide duty.

Mohamed Salah, meanwhile, has also returned to Merseyside after suffering an injury while playing for Egypt against Swaziland but the problem is not thought to be serious and he too will hope to recover for the weekend.

He has since played through the pain barrier for Liverpool in their games against Chelsea, Napoli and Manchester City.

"The medical staff of the Dutch national team spoke to the medical staff of Liverpool and we made the decision that he was only playing the Germany game and then back to Liverpool".

"He is ready to play next weekend".
