Minnesota Vikings regain control of season with key win over Eagles

Late in the second half of his team's game against the Vikings, Eagles defensive lineman Michael Bennett was flagged for roughing the passer after an official determined he hit Kirk Cousins too low. It doesn't matter. It's one every franchise quarterback must bear.

The Eagles haven't scored more than 23 points in the first five games. But since that problem can be addressed in a few months from now, it's time to focus on what's most important about this situation, which is three ways Philadelphia can overcome this injury to Ajayi to still be in great shape in the backfield. It was the fourth time he's been sacked on third down in his three starts. Johnson was beaten badly on Wentz's fumble that went for a touchdown. In addition to that, the run game has become inconsistent. They lost because Wentz doesn't look as sharp this season as he did last season, before he tore two ligaments in his left knee. Also meh. Still a better day than Alshon Jeffery, who caught two of eight targets for 39 yards and failed to hang on to a key third-down pass - he got drilled, but the offense had to have it. Shelton Gibson, of all people, provided the Eagles' longest gain of the day with a 48-yard bomb. In addition to that, the receiving core is still not there yet.

The Eagles showed slight improvements from their performance last week against the Titans, but it was not enough to secure a win. So, we got one in this afternoon's Eagles-Vikings game. To avoid hitting Cousins below the knees Bennett would have had to hit Cousins initially and then basically let go, not completing the tackle.

Is it time to panic? No.

While the Vikings would love to not throw the ball as much and get their running game going, it certainly helps when you have a quarterback like Cousins when the run game isn't working. Just like he showed in his debut, the young signal made sure to use his legs to pick yards and extends plays. Full stop. But it was not the reason the Eagles lost Sunday. It's easy to forget, in the wake of Nick Foles' near-flawless play in both the NFC Championship Game and Super Bowl LII, just how often the Eagles won games previous year because Wentz, more than anyone, won them.

The Eagles benefitted from fast starts a year ago. On defense yes we know about Jalen Mills struggles but collectively they need to get it going as well. If there are any positives moving forward the Eagles are 12-4 in the last 16 meetings vs the Giants.
