Plane carrying body of Pakistani ex-PM Nawaz Sharif's wife reaches Lahore


The body of late Begum Kulsoom Nawaz has been brought back to Pakistan from London and shifted to Jati Umra where her funeral prayers are scheduled to be held at 5:00 pm today.

PML-N leader, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Capt (r) Safdar were brought Tuesday night to Raiwind from Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail on parole.

Famed Islamic scholar Maulana Tariq Jameel will lead the former first lady's funeral prayers as special security measures will be in place to ensure that her rituals pass off without any untoward incident.

Sons of Hussain Nawaz have also come along with the body.

The funeral prayers will be offered at the Regent Park mosque on Thursday afternoon and her body will be flown to Lahore after completion of legal formalities.

Hundreds of party workers also attended the funeral to bid adieu to the former first lady Kulsoom Nawaz.

Shehbaz Sharif, the deceased's brother-in-law and president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), along with Kulsoom's daughter Asma, grandson Zayd Hussain Sharif (Hussain Nawaz's son), and 11 other family members had accompanied the body from London to Lahore.

A large number of people are gathered outside of the Regent Park Mosque.

Sharif's sons - Hasan and Hussain - have decided not to return to the country to attend their mother's funeral. Sharif and two of his family members are now serving prison terms in a corruption case.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Javed Hashmi, Pervez Malik, Dr Asif Saeed Kirmani, Khurram Dastagir, Pervez Rashid, Rana Sanaullah Khan, Senator Ghous Muhammad Niazi, Abid Sher Ali, Khwaja Muhammad Asif, Ahsan Iqbal, Tehmina Daultana, lawyers and the party parliamentarians and workers reached Jattiumra to expressed their grief to the Sharif family. "In case of a delay in Begum Kulsoom's funeral, the parole will be further extended", the spokesperson added.

The coffin of the Begum Kulsoom Nawaz is being taken to the Heathro Airport after funeral prayers.

Sharif is unable to meet visitors arriving at Jati Umra to extend condolences as his health deteriorated on Wednesday, family sources said.
