New York Democrats decide governor, attorney general races

"I think the mailer was a mistake". NY state law allows candidates to run on multiple ballot lines.

But Nixon pointed to a slew of recent upsets ー Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Andrew Gillum, and Ayanna Pressley ー that have fueled her optimism for Thursday's primary.

Cuomo denied advance knowledge of the mailer. Leecia Eve, a former Cuomo aide, was in fourth. They are seeking the Democratic nomination to be New York's attorney general.

Republicans already nominated Marcus Molinaro as their candidate for governor.

Surveys show Cuomo is far ahead, but Nixon says the polls shouldn't be trusted.

"With anti-Semitism and bigotry on the rise, we can't take a chance with inexperienced Cynthia Nixon, who won't stand strong for our Jewish communities", the mailer sent Saturday to some 7,000 Jewish households, said.

The planned opening of the Governor Mario M. Cuomo bridge to replace the old Tappan Zee Bridge between Westchester and Rockland counties was supposed to bolster Cuomo's image as a can-do governor, but a last-minute delay changed that narrative.

"Heads need to roll", said City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, who has endorsed Cuomo.

"You can be an activist and be a productive elected official", Williams said. "It was unconscionable an unacceptable for Cuomo and the state Democratic Party to do this", said Assemblyman Dov Hikind, who said he would no longer vote for Cuomo.

The race for attorney general also could leave Mr. Cuomo smarting.

The unique situation in her race - the resignation of Eric Schneiderman after women accused him of physical abuse created a short, four-month primary season - led to a four-way scrum.

The stakes are high for Mr. Cuomo even if he wins, according to Jeanne Zaino, professor of political science at Iona College in NY.

"New Yorkers & all NYCHA residents its time to get JUSTICE", Minaj tweeted. The latter has garnered her perhaps the most traction.

The other contenders responded by going on the attack. "But she's invited to my next bbq/family gathering and if she's running for anything..." Teachout has punched back by pointing to Maloney's record in the House, which included votes to roll back parts of the Affordable Care Act and the Dodd-Frank banking regulations. While Democrats would be able to pick a new candidate, a race seen as unwinnable for Republicans in 2018 would become a possible pickup.

NY gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon called on her primary opponent, sitting Gov. Andrew Cuomo, to apologize for a mailer paid for by the state Democratic Party headed by Cuomo which questioned her support for issues important to Jewish voters. All eight IDC members are facing challenges, even after disbanding the conference.

A landslide victory for Carter in the IL primary that year made some voters think Kennedy's campaign was done, so they began to think of the NY primary as a referendum on the president, The Washington Post reported at the time.

Two Democrats who were not in the IDC, Simcha Felder and Martin Dilan, also are facing challengers. Bernie Sanders and the editorial board of the New York Times, which said she is well prepared to serve as a firewall against the Trump administration and keep tabs on "a state government in which ethics can seem a mere inconvenience".
