This guide will help you decide if you want to pre-order the Apple Watch 4 so you get it on day one, or if it is a better idea to hold off and see how this first major change to the Apple Watch design handles in the real world. When watchOS 5 is available to install next Monday (Sept. 17), the Series 3 will get numerous new fitness-tracking features the Series 4 will have, including automatic workout-tracking and one-on-one fitness challenges.

And the new dynamic watch faces positively dazzle on the large new display. Apple has made the cases of the new Apple Watch larger, too, bumping them to 40mm and 44mm, up from the 38mm and 42mm sizes found in previous generations.

The Apple Watch Series 4 will go on sale on Friday and be available September 21. (Unfortunately, the ECG feature won't be available when the device ships next week; the company says it will arrive later this year.) Thanks to Apple's improved gyroscope and accelerometer, the new Apple Watch can now detect falls and alert your emergency contacts if you're rendered immobile after a tumble. Apple also upgraded their health features with the Watch 4 which now comes with fall detection and ECG.

Like the previous Apple Watch, battery life is claimed to be 18 hours, but a charge should last longer for workouts and running than before: 6 hours with Global Positioning System.

Apple introduced solid-state buttons to the Apple Watch platform, which were applied to the Digital Crown and the Side button.

Along with its refreshed iPhones, Apple debuted its latest Apple Watch today. It detects electrical heartbeats in the wrist and allows you to take an ECG in just 30 seconds. Apple has designed some new watchOS faces that can display as many as eight "complications" at once, including combinations of different time zones, pictures of close friends or family that users can tap to quickly message, watchOS' activity rings, music, heart rate, air quality, UV index, weather, and much more.

The Series 4 has the same 18-hour battery life as the Series 3, Apple says. The Apple Watch EKG, which has been cleared by the Food and Drug Administration, works by passing a current through your chest after you touch the crown of the device.

Apple's new wearable also retains the hardware features of the previous device, along with various improvements such as the addition of Bluetooth 5.0. The user interface (UI) has also been redesigned.

Series 4 contains a tiny new S4 chip.

It will be available in three aluminium finishes, and there is a brand-new Gold stainless finish apart from Silver and Space Grey.

The Apple Watch Series 4 will start at a $399 for the non-cellular Global Positioning System model, and the cellular-model will start at $499.

It's good that Apple's managed to retain the form factor while making the screen bigger, and the mix of the fitness and more medically-aimed features will broaden the attraction of owning an Apple Watch.
