Southgate insisted after being outplayed for the majority of a 2-1 defeat by Spain in his side's inaugural Nations League encounter on Saturday that England must persist with his intention to improve on playing out from the back under pressure.

Striker Marcus Rashford scored the winning goal in the second half, converting from Kyle Walker's cross.

England got the new season back on track with their first win of the campaign.

Harry Maguire and Danny Rose have admitted that there were heated words between the England players in the dressing room during friendly with Switzerland on Tuesday evening. "We know how exciting he is and we know he is going to be a top player, he's got a super mentality and he's great to work with".

The visitors continued to see more of the ball and their control over the game increased as the first half wore on, but England did come close to an opener in the 16th minute when Trent Alexander-Arnold's free kick was glanced narrowly wide of the target by a stooping Eric Dier.

'We always give them the first three or four minutes to themselves.

It wasn't until the five minutes of stoppage time that Switzerland looked like getting an equaliser, and even then the finishing was wayward as both Albian Ajeti and Edimilson Fernandes sent shots high and wide of the target when they should have done better.

England worldwide and Tottenham midfielder, Dele Alli, will be available for Spurs against Inter in their Champions League group game which is scheduled to be held in a weeks time at the San Siro. "We turned it over too easily in that first period but we kept the ball better in the second half".

"It was quite calm by the time I got in there". "We expect and encourage it because they're intelligent footballers and it's important they have a view of what's going on".

'We want an environment that's demanding.

The victory ended a run of three successive defeats before next month's Nations League ties in Croatia and Spain.

We know all about the influx of foreign players into the Premier League and how the selection pool is becoming ever smaller to pick from.

"I imagine Croatia are having similar difficulties".
