Ayanna Pressley ousts longtime Democrat in Massachusetts House primary

Democratic Rep. Mike Capuano has conceded defeat to Boston city councilor Ayanna Pressley in the MA primary for his US House seat Tuesday, the latest upset to rock the Democratic Party and showcase a restive base eager for change. And black politicians in three states - Florida, Georgia and Maryland - have won the Democratic nomination for governor, a historic turn for a country that has elected just two black governors in USA history.

The 7th district primary results should encourage all campaigns to better incorporate and engage people of color, those who speak English as a second language and young people who often feel like their vote doesn't matter.

Elections officials say voter turnout in Boston is running ahead of the last statewide primary four years ago.

At Quincy's Thomas Crane Library, 331 voters had cast a ballot with two hours to go before the polls closed, putting the polling place well on track to surpass the 375 voters that Warden Marion Flavin said it has during a typical primary.

"Because of President Trump, voters are fired up and turning out, something we saw even in city elections a year ago", Curtatone said.

Pressley's victory is one in a growing line of stunning upsets by progressive candidates this primary season. Elizabeth Warren in November. He was buoyed by an advantage in campaign funds and a number of endorsements, including from Deval Patrick, the state's first African-American governor.

In this case, a new generation of Democrats in Congress could alter the party's approach to Mr. Trump, even if the Republicans retain control of Capitol Hill in the midterms - and especially if the Democrats grab control. There, as the New York Times reports, she reformed the city's liquor licensing process, updated Boston Public Schools' policy for pregnant and parenting teens, and created a City Council committee focused on women and girls.

Regarding Pressley being endorsed by Ocasio-Cortez, Burton said, "I'm interested in Ayanna Pressley as the person she is, not by the particulars of every single person who has endorsed her". In making his concession remarks, Capuano told his campaign team, "I will tell you Ayanna Pressley is going to be a good congresswoman and I will tell you that MA is going to be well served". Other progressive candidates, including Cimbrelo, had hoped to pull an Ocasio-Cortez-style upset Tuesday night.

"It is not good enough to see the Democrats back in power", Pressley told supporters.

With her primary win in the safe Democratic seat, Pressley is now poised to become the state's first African-American elected to the House.

That she'd diversify Massachusetts' all-white, mostly male House delegation is "the bonus" of her candidacy she said during that interview. "America is going to be OK", Capuano said, adding, "Ayanna Pressley is going to be a good congresswoman and MA will be well served". She used that experience to re-engage her supporters and turn out tens of thousands of new voters in the primary.

Conceding on Tuesday, Mr Capuano said: "Clearly the district wanted a lot of change".

"The problem is nothing is getting done, and the Republicans are in charge because the Democrats didn't deliver on promises made", she said.

Galvin was being challenged in the Democratic primary by Boston City Councilor Josh Zakim.

There is no Republican challenger in the November general election.

Among other races, comedian Jimmy Tingle was trying to shift from political humor to political office as he runs for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor against Quentin Palfrey, a one-time aide to President Barack Obama.
