Gordon is expected to produce rain accumulations of 4 to 8 inches (10-20 cm) over parts of Florida Panhandle, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, southern Iowa and IL, with isolated maximum amounts of 12 inches (30cm) through early Saturday.
The storm later weakened into a depression, dumping heavy rains across southern U.S. states. The number of outages has been rising rapidly after dark Tuesday night as tropical storm Gordon's wind and rain began to take a toll on the Gulf Coast's power grid.
This excessive rainfall "will cause flash flooding across portions of these areas", the NHC noted.

As Gordon slowly fizzles out, forecasters are turning their attention to Hurricane Florence, which is some 2,400 miles away from the US, and another potential storm near the coast of Africa.
Before a slight decline in wind speed, it was thought that Gordon would be the first Atlantic basin hurricane to make landfall in 2018.
