McCain's death comes just one day after we learned the senator and former Republican presidential nominee made a decision to stop medical treatment for brain cancer. "In the thirty three years we shared together, he raised me, taught me, corrected me, comforted me, encouraged me and supported me in all things", Meghan McCain wrote.

Prior to his tweet, Trump had not publicly acknowledged the rapidly declining health of McCain after his family announced Friday he would be discontinuing treatment for his brain cancer.

President Donald Trump, who once mocked McCain's war record, said he sent his "deepest sympathies and respect". "With the senator when he passed were his wife Cindy and their family", his office said in a statement.

Cindy McCain, the senator's wife of 38 years, expressed her grief on Twitter. "I want to find somebody whose desire is to be in the United States Senate and can serve Arizona well".

His father, John McCain Jr., and grandfather, John McCain Sr., were both admirals in the US Navy.

Glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, also claimed the life of former senator Ted Kennedy.

He was preparing for a bombing run in 1967 when a missile inadvertently fired from another plane hit his fuel tanks, triggering a fatal explosion and fire.
