The price of the phone and the exact launch date will be announced at a later date, the press release said.

LG Electronics North America CEO William Cho said the tech company's almost 20-year partnership with Sprint would expand, with Sprint's 5G experts to partner with LG in the design of the phone.

Sprint announced Tuesday that it is working with LG Electronics USA to deliver the first mobile 5G smartphone in the country. Sprint has promised 5G in nine cities during the first half of 2019, and its mid-band spectrum is designed for citywide coverage.

Every carrier now has a robust and mature 4G LTE network, so it's nearly time to start rolling out a new wireless standard.

The era of 5G smartphones is coming. "And we're excited to revolutionize the mobile industry as we dramatically improve the way Sprint customers work, play and stay connected". The Korean LG headquarters confirmed the news Wednesday. Apart from 5G, the new phone will also have the Snapdragon 855 chipset, better cameras, and other flagship features. That's on paper, at least, and theoretically available in a handful of cities first, including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Kansas, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, and Washington, D.C.

LG Electronics said the cooperation with Sprint will pave the way for the company to expand ties with North American mobile carriers. Meanwhile, Huawei and Lenovo are unlikely to gain support from major U.S. carriers, Samsung may skip 5G capabilities as far as the Galaxy S10 is concerned, and Apple will naturally only join the party in the fall of 2019. With Massive MIMO at the foundation of Sprint's Gigabit LTE and 5G service, Sprint can keep meeting its customers' demand for unlimited data and high-bandwidth applications, such as television in high definition and virtual reality.
