United were 'suspicious' of signing Diego Godin for one reason

Atletico coach Diego Simeone spoke with Godin at the beginning of preseason to make it clear he wants him to stay.

But Mourinho's hopes were dashed after he was was told the Uruguayan worldwide has agreed a new deal with Atletico Madrid.

Sky Sports are reporting that United are looking to sign Godin after being linked with moves for Jerome Boateng, Harry Maguire and Toby Alderweireld.

Now reports emerging from Spain suggest United have made a late effort to sign 32-year-old Godin, with Mourinho eager to add some experience to his defensive line.

"I'm not confident, I'm not confident and the market closes today so is time at least for me to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed".

"So I will have to focus on the players I have".

In his press conference ahead of Friday's season opener against Leicester City, the Portuguese did not sound optimistic about his club's chances of signing anyone before the transfer window slams shut.

Signing Godin at this late stage would be incredible business by United, but it is also highly hard.
