Everton to sign Kurt Zouma on loan after pipping Manchester United

The Toffees were thought to have turned their attentions to other targets such as Chelsea's Kurt Zouma and Manchester United's Marcos Rojo as a result.

Both clubs are in the market to add another centre-back to their squad before the transfer window for Premier League clubs to make signings slams shut on Thursday at 5pm.

Meanwhile, Gomes has been rendered surplus to requirements at Barcelona and has failed to become a regular in the Barca first team.

The United boss is hoping to sign at least one more top class player today with a centre-back the priority and the Manchester giants have reportedly failed to agree terms for the likes of Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld, Jerome Boateng and Yerry Mina in recent weeks.

Mina is expected to be a permanent transfer while midfielder Gomes is likely to be a loan deal. My understanding, I've spoken to somebody in Spain this morning, is that one is very, very close to being done.

However, Chelsea did not want to sell the player to a direct rival and Everton appear to have won the race to sign the player.

The 23-year-old certainly needs to play regularly and maybe joining Everton is not the worst deal that we could get for the defender.

However, Sunday Times reporter has now claimed that Mina would much prefer a move to Old Trafford, but a deal has not yet been agreed between the two clubs.
