The announcement came one day after the state's department of health announced the first confirmed, locally acquired case of the virus in Maryland this year. In addition to Greenwich, WNV positive mosquito pools have been found in Bridgeport, Darien, Easton, New Canaan, Stamford, Stratford Waterbury and West Haven. Soucy added, "We have West Nile in the state every year".

Even though Central Texas experienced an extreme heat wave and drought over the last couple weeks, mosquito populations are usually not impacted by these weather conditions. So far zero human cases have been reported.

"We are now following the CDC Expanded Transmission Protocol measures for West Nile virus ...", Boudreaux said in a press release Monday.

The health officials said that they are also investigating the other virus such as Zika. Public Health continues to work closely with the Environmental Services Department's Vector Control Program to determine the prevalence of the virus in our region.

Dakota Radio Group reports the virus has been detected in blood donations from four counties, including Hand, Faulk, Potter and Todd counties.

"The public should be kept aware that the risk of infection is very real and that risk is still high, in an above average year", they said.

West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito, commonly called a house mosquito, which has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird.

Fredia Wadley said the announcement was a good reminder to take precautions. Other counts showed reductions from 38 to 72 percent at Winter Park, Ravine Lake Park, Sportsman's Club and the state Game, Fish & Parks Department on the state fairgrounds.

Tilley says a team effort between residents and the St. Charles County Mosquito Control program helps to "Block the Bite" and reduce exposure to mosquito bites and related illnesses.
