TMZ, citing police, said it appears that the singer suffered an "apparent heroin overdose", but The Blast said that "sources extremely close to the star are adamant she was not abusing heroin". TMZ reports she had been sober from cocaine for 6 years. Her condition is now unknown.

More information regarding Demi's condition is awaited.

Lovato's Thursday concert in New Jersey has been canceled.

Demi Lovato opened up about her previous addiction troubles in a 2017 documentary. In June, she released a song called "Sober" about a relapse after six years of sobriety.

The singer performed at the California Mid-State Fair on Sunday with her friend, Iggy Azalea.

Demi had been struggling with substance abuse, having lived in a sober living home at one point. "Our thoughts go out to Demi and her family".

Demi was furthermore out on Monday night celebrating a friend's birthday in the same area of Los Angeles - and she was posting photos on her Insta of herself and others.

"Slowly people she cared about started to drift away from her, because it was an unhealthy situation to be around", the source added.

Last month the singer released a song titled "Sober, in which she admitted she had relapsed".

"I don't have to defend anything but it was Red Bull", she tweeted at the time.

At around the same time, Lovato reportedly fired several key members of her team - reportedly people who had helped keep her sober for years now.

It was heartbreaking for her many loyal supporters when just weeks after she celebrated the six years of sobriety on social media, she gave in to the temptation once again. "And I anxious a lot, as her friend, that something was going to leak or somebody would somehow take that and use it negatively against her, or to make her seem like she's got a secret".

Lovato's representatives have not yet commented on the hospitalization.
