Hurricane Chris is expected into turn to a post-tropical storm by the time it reaches Newfoundland on Thursday.

Chris, a Category One hurricane, packed maximum sustained winds of 85 miles per hour (140 kilometres per hour) and was about 205 miles east-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

'Tropical storm Chris is predicted to become a hurricane and move north over the next few days. Its center will be near southeastern Newfoundland Thursday night.

The National Weather Service issued a flash-flood watch for Puerto Rico, warning of thunderstorms and wind gusts.

Hurricane Chris is likely to avoid landfall in America but could make an appearance in Canada later in the week.

Hubbard said the storm's track amounted to good news for people in Nova Scotia, but some eastern areas of the province could still expect some rain.

Although there are now no coastal watches or warnings in effect, weather officials warned that Hurricane Chris could potentially produce heavy surf and create life-threatening rip-currents along the East Coast in the coming days.

The storm has started moving northeast - away from the US - after staying stationary for a couple of days.

Ladbrokes spokeswoman Jessica Bridge said: "Storm Chris is a complete and utter damp squib on the gorgeous summer the United Kingdom has been having, but unfortunately the threat of it has left us with little option but to cut the odds". If anything, conditions will worsen in the coming days as rip currents become a significant concern.
