Dallas police: Mom shoots man trying to take SUV with kids

Authorities in Texas say a local woman shot a man in his head after he stole her auto at a gas station in Dallas this week with her two young children in the backseat.

Officials said the incident took place in the parking lot of a Shell gas station in south Dallas on Wednesday night.

Before she returned from the store, the mother saw a man enter her vehicle and attempt to flee, per CBS 11. Determined to protect her children, she told Fox 4 that she asked the man to get out of her auto, but he refused.

'I wasn't necessarily anxious about my auto, ' she said.

"Im not a killer or anything like that, but I do believe in defending whats mine", the woman said in the interview.

Ms. Booker-Hicks said the man started to drive off, so she went for her firearm that she keeps in the glove box.

Rickey Wright is in hospital after a Texas woman shot him as he tried to steal her SUV with her two children inside.

Wright was taken to a hospital, where his injuries are considered non-life-threatening, according to KXAS-TV.

The carjacker has been charged with two counts of unlawful restraint and unauthorised use of a motor vehicle. She also said that she had just recently purchased a gun to keep in her auto - which is legal in Texas, even without a gun license.

I was just reacting fast, anxious about my kids. Police say he's in serious but stable condition. He was arrested at the scene and will likely face kidnapping and carjacking charges. She just wanted to stop him.
