Kim Jong-un's Night Out in Singapore: A Selfie and a Skyline

As U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un meet on Singapore's Sentosa Island on Tuesday, Trump's Twitter timeline shows an interesting history between the two leaders - one that's marred by insults and threats, with the odd compliment in between.

The summit with Trump is the culmination of months of posturing and negotiating between top USA and North Korean officials and comes less than two weeks after Trump reversed his decision to scrap plans for the meeting, which is set to take place in Singapore.

"When you don't hash out all the issues, just one meeting isn't going to help", Dong said.

"We will all know soon whether or not a real deal, unlike those of the past, can happen!" he wrote.

The historic meeting is the first sitting between a United States president and a North Korean leader since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War.

Officials from the two sides held last-minute talks aimed at laying the groundwork for a meeting that was nearly unthinkable just months ago when the two leaders were exchanging insults and threats that raised fears of war.

The two clasped hands for a long while Tuesday as they posed for photos in front of a row of USA and North Korean flags. On the day before the meeting, weeks of preparation appeared to pick up in pace, with USA and North Korean officials meeting throughout Monday at a Singapore hotel. Pompeo held firm to Trump's position that sanctions will remain in place until North Korea denuclearizes - and said they would even increase if diplomatic discussions did not progress positively.

"We are hopeful this summit will have set the conditions for future successful talks", Pompeo said, describing a far more modest goal than Trump had outlined days earlier.

Critics of the summit leapt at the leaders' handshake and the moonlight stroll Kim took Monday night along the glittering Singapore waterfront, saying it was further evidence that Trump was helping legitimize Kim on the world stage as an equal of the USA president.

His first stop was a park with futuristic, tree-shaped installations, Gardens by the Bay, which also boasts the largest glass greenhouse and tallest indoor waterfall in the world.

The KCNA also confirmed that he was guided by Singaporean officials, including its foreign minister.

Just a few months ago, Kim was an worldwide pariah accused of ordering the killing of his uncle, a half-brother and scores of officials suspected of disloyalty.

If things go well, South Korea's Moon may seek a trilateral summit with Trump and Kim on July 27 to mark the anniversary of the Korean War armistice signed on that day in 1953, according to South Korea's Chosun Ilbo newspaper.

After meeting privately and with aides, Trump and Kim moved into the luncheon at a long flower-bedecked table.

Dennis Rodman arrives in Singapore. But there were scant details on what new commitments had been secured from Kim, even as Trump announced he would end the regular military exercises the United States conducts with South Korea.

His excursion out of the hotel caused a big stir with guests who were told to get behind a barricade while dozens of North Korean security men and Singapore police officers and government officials blocked off the lobby. "The two leaders discussed recent developments ahead of today's summit with North Korea and agreed to consult closely following the meeting", the Washington's release said on Monday.
