German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday said she expected hard talks during the G7 summit in Canada later in the week.

"We are in agreement that a return of Russian Federation to the G7 can not happen unless substantial progress is made in terms of the problems with Ukraine", Merkel told reporters on the sidelines of the ongoing G7 summit in Canada. It is among several photos the White House sent to news media after the German government released the Merkel photo.

The EU has already said it will announce counter-measures against Trump's metals tariffs on Jul 1.

The day before, Trump had called for Russian Federation to be reinstated to the group, despite its annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region four years ago, a stance that broke with the other leaders at the gathering.

Merkel said there was a broad agreement among G7 leaders that tariffs and other trade barriers should be reduced.

The former engaged in a Twitter argument with Mr Trump this week over new U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminium which will affect the EU, Canada and Mexico.

Macron also tweeted Saturday a photo of the other leaders and aides surrounding Trump, who was one of just two people sitting.

The G7 - an informal annual summit of democracies with highly developed economies - took place on Friday and Saturday in the Quebec resort town of Charlevoix in Canada, which holds the rotating leadership this year.

The two-day summit in Charlevoix, Quebec, ended in disarray after Trump said the United States wouldn't endorse the joint communique, and insulted Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
