Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann were among the 23 players named by France manager Didier Deschamps in his provisional squad for the 2018 World Cup, but there was no place for Pogba's Manchester United team-mate Anthony Martial. Samuel Umtiti, Raphael Varane and Adil Rami will be in contention for the center-half position.

"He played the first half-hour of the Europa League final and his situation worsened". Man City left back Benjamin Mendy recovered in time from a long-term knee injury to make the squad, but club teammate Aymeric Laporte was among the talented players who will not be making the trip to Russian Federation.

"There is a significant risk of a recurrence for a muscle tear. Unfortunately for Dimitri, it will not be possible".

France features a top-heavy squad that includes Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele and a midfield stocked with the likes of N'Golo Kante and Paul Pogba.

He explained: "They were good against Germany, but the whole team were".

'I have a complete analysis based on what they have shown me and the role they could have in the squad at the World Cup.

Other unlucky players included midfielders Andre Gomes and Renato Sanches, forward Nani and defender Eliseu.

Giroud is selected as one of Deschamps' strikers having featured regularly in qualifying and scored four goals as France topped their group.

Considering his stance on Payet, it is perhaps surprising Deschamps opted to select Benjamin Mendy. The 29-year-old Nzonzi has just two caps.

"Benjamin is coming out of a long and serious injury", he added.

Deschamps has until June 4 before submitting his definitive squad list. I can change any of the players at any time. And it's still a friendly match, even if it's Germany. Benjamin has athletic qualities beyond the average, but to be sure he can play 90 minutes, it will take time.
