Qualcomm will launch new processor for wearables this fall


But Kedia does believe that these new chips will "significantly change" the Wear OS platform as a whole. Kedia said that not only is a new lead watch arriving this fall, but so is a new wearable chipset from Qualcomm that has been built from the "ground up". Yes, I'm talking about Qualcomm and the Snapdragon 2100 Android Wear-ready chip they made years ago. Unlike the Snapdragon 2100, which was a slightly modified version of the older Snapdragon 400 smartwatch chip (which itself was a slightly revised smartphone chip), the new chipset will be built from scratch and is expected to bring notable improvements elsewhere. He also said that multiple OEM partners will be launching their new Watch OS devices powered by this chip by the holiday season.

Watches which now use the Wear 2100 chip include the Diesel On Full Guard, which packs a touch AMOLED display and is IP67 water resistant. The new chip is created to be smaller (as you would expect considering the 2100 used a 28nm build process) resulting in smaller smartwatches and provide a full fitness experience, all while making the battery last longer. That's something that Qualcomm has been focusing on during the development process for this new chip.

In the past couple of years, there have been a large number of brands that have come on board the Android Wear wagon, most of these are the same watch inside but different design.

We have no word on when the new SoC will be unveiled but we can say that Apple finally is getting a worthy competitor in the Smartwatch department. Google reiterated that Wear OS would gain new functionality in smaller, incremental updates. All the variants of the chipset will have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi as standard, while the fitness versions will sport Global Positioning System as well.

One of the big use cases Kedia sees as not being met with the current technology is the needs of fashion brands, which are less about intensive features like fitness, and more about just looking good.
