Jordi Alba says Barcelona would give Real Madrid a guard of honour

Barcelona only needed a draw against Deportivo but courtesy of a Lionel Messi hat-trick won 4-2 on Sunday.

Ernesto Valverde's unbeaten side have 86 points from 34 games, 11 clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid.

A guard of honor - where the receiving team is paid tribute by the lined up opposing team - is traditionally given to the newly crowned champions the following game after their league triumph is confirmed. "We only lost once in the Cup (against Espanyol) and in Roma where we had a very unexpected result", Messi added.

Clubs are not obliged to give guards of honour but it sounds like Real are still bitter about Barca not giving them one after they won the Club World Cup in December.

It was the 25th league title for Barcelona, moving within eight of record-holder Real Madrid.

The first Barcelona coach to win the title was was James Bellamy in the 1928/1929.

Messi (32) and Luis Suarez (23) have led the way going forward, with summer signing Paulinho also chipping in with eight.

"In our case, Barca would do the guard of honour", Alba told reporters.

Valverde also believes the LaLiga title is the toughest to win, saying: "It seems the most hard because in the cup or in the competitions with elimination, a bad day takes you out".

The Catalan giants gave Real Madrid a guard of honour after Bernd Schuster guided the club to the league championship back in 2008.

The 33-year-old helped Blaugrana to the La Liga title and Copa del Rey to end his glittering spell at Nou Camp, having won 35 trophies at club and global level. "We are trying to knock out the Germans and defend the Champions League in another final in Kiev".

"It's a disgrace (the criticism) and the players need to stand up and admit that we all make mistakes".

Valverde also joined a select group of Barca coaches who won the double in their first season. "He has managed the dressing room perfectly", he said.

"In the end, LaLiga is very long", he said.

"We deplore what happened in the Champions League, it prevented him from going out with a treble, but he's leaving in an impressive fashion".
